Carimbó da Roda - Renato Velasco ft. Enda de Miranda (Clip Video)
“Today, we're taking you to northern Brazil, where the forest meets the ocean, and where music is danced barefoot on the sand. Welcome to the world of carimbó.”
The carimbó is first and foremost a rhythm. Deep, vibrant, hypnotic. A drum hollowed out of a tree trunk, struck by hand. That's where its name comes from, by the way: kurimbó, in the Tupi language, means “hollow drum”.
This music was born in the state of Pará, around Belém, on the banks of the Amazon River. And as is often the case in Brazil, it is the product of a fusion: a little bit of Africa in the rhythm, a little bit of Europe in the guitar, and a lot of Amazonian in the soul.
“The carimbó is a celebration, but it is also a ritual. A circular dance between a man and a woman. She turns, she plays, she invites, she dodges. And he tries to seduce her, often with a hat, a symbol of an ancestral courtship game.”
The women dance in long, colorful skirts that swirl like tropical flowers. Their steps are both light and grounded — a perfect balance between earth and freedom.
Musically, carimbó relies on percussion, maracas, sometimes flutes, a banjo, or a guitar. The singing is often joyful, repetitive, and invites the audience to respond. You don't really listen to it: you enter into it, you participate.
“In the 1970s, a certain Pinduca — nicknamed the 'king of carimbó' — popularized this rhythm throughout Brazil. And in 2014, carimbó was recognized as an intangible cultural heritage of the country.”
Even today, it continues to inspire modern music such as lambada, siriá, and tecno-brega. But at its core, carimbó remains what it has always been: a celebration of the connection between people, nature, and the body.
“Carimbó is the voice of the Amazon. A music of joy, resistance, and love. And, even thousands of kilometers from Belém, it has this magical power: the power to make the rain and smiles dance.”
